What are the best images for Pinterest? Which photos bring success to a web marketing campaign on social networks? Social media marketing agency Curalate, conducted a statistical survey on the photo-sharing platform to identify some common elements of all images that receive the most repins, likes and comments. The sample was narrowed down to 500 thousand photos of major corporate brands and considered 30 parameters.

Eight aspects emerged from this research that can make a difference to the success of a social photo on Pinterest.

– Images with warm colors tending toward red or orange get almost twice as many repins as those with cool colors such as blue.

– Images with many colors are repinned 3.25 times more than those with only one dominant color.

– A medium brightness is perfect for Pinterest. The repins of these images are 20 times greater than those that are very dark and 8 times greater than those that are very light.

– The same goes for average saturation (the intensity of the color hue): when it is at 50 percent, the image is repinned 4 times more than fully saturated ones and 10 times more than desaturated ones.

Vertical portrait format images between 2:3 and 4:5 are more successful. They have 60 percent more repin than square, wide or very long ones.

– Images that have a background of less than 10% receive repins between 2 and 4 times higher than those with a background of more than 40%.

– Images with smooth texture get 17 times higher repins than those with rough texture.

Photos with no faces receive 23% more repins than those with faces.

According to research findings, a successful image on Pinterest should be: with lots of colors, on warm tones, with medium brightness and saturation, in 2:3 or 4:4 format, full with lots of background, smooth and without people’s faces. This is the sketch of theperfect image for sharing on social networks.
